Kicking Off the New Year with Custom Woodworking Projects
Share
There’s something refreshing about starting a new year with a blank slate and a workshop full of potential. As the calendar turned, I dove headfirst into several woodworking projects, each unique and rewarding in its own way. These projects not only gave me the chance to create functional and beautiful pieces but also allowed me to connect with neighbors and friends in meaningful ways. Here’s a glimpse into how 2025 has kicked off in the shop.
Maple Bench for My Neighbor’s Daughters
When my neighbor asked for a sturdy yet stylish bench for his daughters, I knew maple would be the perfect choice. Its strength and subtle grain made it ideal for a piece that will likely see plenty of use. The finished bench has a warm, natural look that blends functionality with charm—perfect for a growing family.
Walnut Washer/Dryer Countertop
Another neighbor had a laundry room in need of some organization, and I was thrilled to help. Using walnut, I crafted a sleek countertop to sit over her washer and dryer. The rich tones of the walnut not only added elegance to the space but also provided a practical surface for folding clothes and storing essentials.
Curly Maple Hat Rack
For the hat enthusiast, I designed and built a rack capable of holding 18 hats. Made from curly maple, the piece highlights the wood’s stunning natural patterns, adding an element of sophistication to a practical solution. It’s always satisfying to combine utility with beauty in such a seamless way.
Coffee Table and Coasters with Devon
Collaborations are always a joy, and teaming up with my buddy Devon was no exception. Together, we crafted a coffee table out of sapele wood. Its rich color and fine grain gave the table a modern yet timeless appeal. To complement it, we also made a set of mixed-wood coasters, combining functionality with a touch of artistic flair.
Rustic Walnut Side Table
To round out the month, I completed a rustic side table made from walnut. Its natural beauty and sturdy design make it a perfect addition to any cozy living space. I love how the rustic aesthetic allows the wood’s natural character to shine through.
Whiskey Flight Board
For a client who loves entertaining, I crafted a whiskey flight board that holds three glasses. Made from ambrosia maple, this piece combines elegance and functionality, making it perfect for showcasing fine whiskey tastings.
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on these early projects, I can’t help but feel excited for what’s to come in the workshop this year. Each piece I’ve made so far has reinforced my passion for woodworking and my appreciation for the connections it fosters. I’m looking forward to tackling more custom requests, experimenting with new designs, and working with a variety of materials to bring creative visions to life.
